Chrystal hosts family office lunch with Lord Mark Poltimore

March 2015

Chrystal Capital Partners LLP (Chrystal), the London based corporate finance firm specialising in alternative sources of funding, hosted a lunch for members of its family office network on Friday 6 March 2015 at the Dining Room of 34 London. They were joined by special guests Lord Poltimore, Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe, and Gary Bloom, Managing Director at the Bordeaux Index.

Global demand for fine wine has increased significantly over the past few decades. Wine is no longer just an object of enjoyment and it is now considered a profitable commodity investment. Art has long been considered an investment of passion, one that not only offers aesthetic pleasure but the potential for economic benefit. The rationale for the lunch was that Chrystal Capital has been regularly approached by a number of both single family offices and UHNWIs, based both in the UK and internationally, who are increasingly looking at both as an investment class.

Lord Mark Poltimore joined Sotheby’s in 2002, and is Deputy Chairman of Sotheby’s Europe. He is one of the main auctioneers at Sotheby’s and has been involved in major client and business development activities in Europe and the new markets in Russia and the Middle East. He has been in the auction world for 30 years specialising in Impressionist Art and 19th Century Pictures.

Gary Boom is the Managing Director of Bordeaux Index, which he established in  1997. It has grown to become one of the leading global fine wine merchants with offices in London, Hong Kong, Singapore and Los Angeles, as well as a rapidly growing international customer base.

Chrystal Capital’s regular informal luncheons, attended by family office members, high net worth individuals, entrepreneurs and institutional investors, hold discussions on views on the market, provide unique insights into specialist areas of investment as well as offer an opportunity to make new acquaintances within the global family office community. Prior lunches have been hosted by esteemed individuals such as Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, Martin Gilbert, Mike Lynch, Tony Hayward, Sir Stuart Rose, Luke Johnson, Crispin Odey, Peter Hambro and Jon Moulton.

James Innes, Partner at Chrystal Partners, commented: “Family offices are continually expanding their investment horizons in search of superior returns from real assets. Both Lord Poltimore and Mr Boom gave fascinating insights into areas that have experienced tremendous increases in value over the past decade. It was a pleasure to introduce them to a group of families that look to Chrystal Capital to bring them alternative investment ideas.”

Lord Poltimore, commented: “Chrystal Capital brought together family offices who we see as contemporaries of Sotheby‘s clients. It was a pleasure to host such a magnificent event.”

Mr Boom, added: “They were a knowledgeable crowd with a number having fabulous collections and I can only congratulate them on their investments acumen.”
