Chrystal hosts family office lunch for Classic and Performance Cars

June 2015

Chrystal Capital Partners LLP (Chrystal), the London based corporate finance firm specialising in alternative sources of funding, hosted a lunch for members of its family office network on Wednesday 24 June 2015 at the Dining Room of 34 London. They were joined by special guests Simon Kidston, founder of Kidston SA classic car advisory, and Paul Mackenzie, Executive Director of McLaren Special Operations.

Increasingly, both modern performance cars and classics are being viewed as a new investment class, with prices surging in recent years.  We brought together two hosts who are considered leaders in their respective fields of classic and performance cars, along with individuals from our network of family offices who share a passion for all things automotive.  Kidston and Mackenzie both shared their perspectives on the sector and discussed with the whole group whether high-value cars should be just for pleasure or should be an investment class in itself.

Simon Kidston co-founded Bonhams Europe and later founded classic car advisory house Kidston SA in Geneva.  Simon is one of world’s pre-eminent classic car experts and is currently a judge at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the voice of the Villa d’Este Concours in Italy.

Paul Mackenzie joined McLaren in 1999 as a Project Manager with McLaren Composites. Paul is responsible for the programme of the sell-out McLaren P1™, overseeing the project from its initial discussions, through to first customer deliveries, which took place on the 50th anniversary of the McLaren brand in September 2013.  He continues to oversee the programme for the brand’s HALO product and is director of McLaren Special Operations (MSO), the division of McLaren Automotive responsible for the delivery of bespoke projects as well as the servicing of the McLaren F1 fleet.

The subject of the lunch was well received and considered highly informative by the twenty select individuals that attended. Over the course of the last five years, we have had over 200 family offices attend our lunch’s, providing a platform upon which attendees can develop relationships with similarly minded people as well as enhance their understandings of the individual topics discussed. Prior lunches have been hosted by esteemed individuals such as Lord Poltimore, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, Martin Gilbert, Mike Lynch, Tony Hayward, Sir Stuart Rose, Luke Johnson, Crispin Odey, Peter Hambro and Jon Moulton.

James Innes, Partner at Chrystal Partners, commented: “Our family office lunch’s have now formed a fundamental networking platform for Chrystal and our guests, providing both an instance to build relationships in an informal environment, with no sales pitches allowed from anybody!”

Simon Kidston, commented: “The event was an overall success and benefitted from the well-informed nature of attendees – some of whom have successfully invested, and those who maybe want to increase their knowledge to decide whether to delve into the market.”
Paul Mackenzie, added: “It was wonderful to educate and interact with a group of like-minded, intelligent individuals in such a relaxed atmosphere.”
