Chrystal hosts a private lunch with Michael Milken

December 2017

Chrystal Capital Partners LLP (Chrystal), the FCA regulated corporate finance boutique based in London, hosted a lunch for a select group of 30 guests on Saturday 2 December 2017 at 34 Restaurant, Mayfair.

The guest speaker was Michael Milken, the pioneering-billionaire Chairman of the Milken Institute and arguably one of the most inspiring individuals of our time, having been named one of the ‘75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century’ by Esquire magazine.  His career has mirrored his four main professional passions: medical research, education, public health and access to capital. He has been uniquely successful in creating value, whether measured in lives saved (Fortune magazine called him “The Man Who Changed Medicine”), students inspired (Forbes said he is an education visionary) or jobs created.  Beginning in 1969, he financed thousands of companies that collectively created millions of jobs.

The Milken Institute, founded in 1991, is an independent, not for profit economic think tank which focuses on market-based principals and financial innovations to social issues.

Guests of the lunch included some of the world’s most powerful and influential family offices and entrepreneurs as well as a diverse mix of leaders from a variety of high-profile organisations.

The main theme covered was around the challenge of commercial collaboration between family offices and institutions finding ways to successfully co-invest.   Challenges around this were discussed as well as the large divide between expected returns from the perspective of private and institutional capital.  Other topics covered were around: “creating meaningful lives” which touched up various aspects of prosperity, financial technology, human capital, social capital and real assets.

James Innes, a partner of Chrystal Capital, commented: “We have worked closely with the Milken Institute for a number of years and it was a pleasure to host Michael and a number of our global family office relationships.  Michael certainly gave us food for thought and this started a lively conversation on the role of family office investment in the global economy.  We look forward to catching up with Michael at his global conference in LA in April.”

Michael Milken commented: “I was very pleased to meet a selection of the elite European and GCC family office community.  They are well represented by their association with Chrystal as they look to gain access to global investment opportunities and it was a pleasure to hear of their strategies.”

Chrystal’s regular informal luncheons and private events hold discussions on views on the market, provide unique insights into specialist areas of investment, as well as offer an opportunity to make new acquaintances within the global family office community. Esteemed individuals such as Niklas Zennström, Brent Hoberman, Christian Angermayer, Lord Mark Poltimore, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, Martin Gilbert, Jay Liang, Sheikh Mubarak Al-Sabah, Mike Lynch, Tony Hayward, Sir Stuart Rose, Luke Johnson, Crispin Odey, Peter Hambro and Jon Moulton have spoken at Chrystal’s events, covering a wide range of topics from software technology and UK private equity to the oil & gas, retail and agricultural forestry industries.
